Profile

Kalman Magyar has over two decades of international experience as a lawyer. He has been called to the bar in Ontario as a Barrister & Solicitor (by the Law Society of Upper Canada), and over the course of his career has had the privilege of being admitted to the bars of New York, New Jersey, and several United States federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court.

Kalman has taught Canadian Business Law courses at Seneca College, where he has served as a part-time Professor for the School of Accounting and Financial Services.  He previously was an adjunct professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, where he taught Civil Litigation courses for the University’s Paralegal Studies Program.

A graduate of Brooklyn Law School in 1998 (where he won the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for achieving the highest grade in Food & Drug Law course) and Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University (with honours) in 1995, Kalman was a Judicial Law Clerk for the Superior Court of New Jersey from 1998 to 1999, and engaged in private practice for two prominent New Jersey/New York-based law firms from 1999 to 2007; firms which represented business based locally as well as global Fortune 500 companies.  He subsequently became Assistant General Counsel for Iovate Health Sciences in the Toronto area, where he worked for several years before re-entering into private practice in 2011.

Kalman is now the Managing Partner of Magyar, Bogle & O’Hara LLP, with a practice that combines working on a wide range of legal issues for entities of all sizes – from global companies to small start-ups – and litigating a variety of cases throughout the United States and Canada, particularly in the area of intellectual property law and complex commercial actions.

The son of Hungarian-born parents, Kalman speaks Hungarian fluently and provides legal services to Hungarian-born businesspeople in their mother tongue.

Kalman is also an accomplished Hungarian folk musician, and during his vacation time and on many weekends, travels to perform with his folk band at Hungarian and American venues.  He is also actively involved in his local Bloor West Village-High Park community, currently serving on the Board of Toronto High Park FC and managing his son’s competitive soccer team.  Kalman is an avid tennis and soccer player and fan, competes in the Inter-County Tennis Association of Toronto and Polson Pier Soccerworld Leagues, and holds season tickets for his beloved Toronto FC.  He lives in the Bloor West Village area with his wife and three children.
